Vasily Pantelemonovich Dalmatov (1852-1912), a Russian actor of the Alexandrinsky and other major stages known for dramatic and character roles. Named by the journalist alongside Svobodin and Sazonov as evidence that good Petersburg actors exist, against the noble father's sweeping dismissal.

SENSITIVITY -- Vasily Panteleimonovich Dalmatov, a separate rival actor at the Alexandrinsky Theatre, dismissed here as "wooden"; a frank professional put-down translated faithfully per this corpus's practice, to be flagged as Chekhov's private opinion rather than public criticism. Keep Dalmatov distinct from Davydov in any index -- both are competing claimants in the Shabelsky-adjacent casting politics of this letter, though only Davydov is actually cast (as Ivanov, \S12) while Dalmatov is being warned off Shabelsky specifically. This closing line restates, with more heat, the same casting demand for Count Shabelsky for Svobodin first set out at \S14.

"This time" (source "в этот раз") implies a running joke or precedent of stage clumsiness on Dalmatov's part opposite Savina, imagined here as part of Chekhov's comic daydream of opening-night gossip rather than a report of an actual incident.
