A major city on the eastern (Asian) slope of the Ural Mountains, on Chekhov's overland route to Sakhalin in spring 1890. He datelined two letters from here on 29 April 1890 (this one and the companion family letter), marking the trip's symbolic crossing from Europe into Asia -- 'my right leg is in Europe, and my left is in Asia.'
