Headnote

1 Written from Moscow to Maria Kiseleva, a family friend and amateur writer whose estate at Babkino the Chekhovs summered near. Chekhov, acting as her informal literary agent and mentor, responds to a story of hers ("Galoshes," published under the pseudonym "Pince-nez") and lays out five half-joking, half-earnest rules for writing successfully for the "minor press": write constantly, write on any subject, avoid plagiarizing foreign originals too obviously, write in a single sitting, and keep it short. He closes with theater gossip, then turns abruptly serious: his brother Nikolai, staying with him, is gravely ill with a gastric hemorrhage, prompting a bleak reflection on death and squalor before a terse final note that money is short.

2 The letter is one of Chekhov’s most quoted statements of his own craft discipline and his ambivalent relationship to hack journalism, and it captures the tonal whiplash characteristic of his correspondence — comic bravado giving way, within a paragraph, to real anguish over his brother’s health (Nikolai would die of tuberculosis less than two years later).

Yesterday I received your "Galoshes" from A. S., dear Maria Vladimirovna. I received it and at once, grinning maliciously, winking an eye, and rubbing my hands with sly relish, set about reading it...
You shall have my answer on "Galoshes" in due course. For now let me say only that the story is written with literary skill – briskly, concisely, relatively and approximately. I think the verdict will be favorable.
The pseudonym Pince-nez is a happy choice.
Псевдоним Pince-nez удачен.
There is naturally no need to assure you that I am very glad to be your literary-and-honorarium broker and cicerone. The post flatters my vanity, and to discharge it is no harder than carrying a pail behind you when you come back from fishing. If you need to know my terms, here they are:
1) Write as much as possible!! Write, write, write... until your fingers break. (The main thing in life is penmanship!) Write more, bearing in mind not so much the intellectual development of the masses as the circumstance that at first a good half of your trifles, owing to your being unaccustomed to the "minor press," will be liable to rejection. About the rejections I shall not deceive you, dissemble, or equivocate – you have my word. And let the rejections not trouble you. Even if half of everything is returned, the work will still pay better than at the "Children’s-Bohemian Rest." As for vanity... I don’t know about you, but I have long since grown used to it...
2) Write on all sorts of subjects, the comic and the tearful, the good and the bad. Give us stories, trifles, anecdotes, witticisms, puns, and so on, and so on.
3) Reworkings from the foreign are a perfectly legal business, but only so long as the sin against the Eighth Commandment does not offend the eye... (For "Galoshes" you shall burn in hell after the 22nd of January!) Avoid popular subjects. However thick-headed our gentlemen editors may be, catching them out in ignorance of Parisian literature, and Maupassant-mongering in particular, is no easy labor.
4) Write at a single sitting, with full faith in your pen. Honestly, without flattery, I tell you: eight-tenths of the writers of the "minor press," beside you, are cobblers and bunglers.
5) Brevity is acknowledged in the minor press to be the first virtue. The best measure may serve as letter paper (this very kind on which I am now writing). The moment you reach the eighth or tenth page – stop! And besides, letter paper is easier to post... So much for the terms.
Having heard instruction from so great a wit and genius as myself, be so good now as to accept from me the assurance of my most sincere devotion. This same assurance, should they wish it, may be received under signature by Alexei Sergeyevich, Vasilisa, and Sergei.
I have not yet called on the widow Khludova. I go to the theater. Not a single pretty face... Nothing but frights, frumps, and frowsy horrors. It grows quite eerie...
Farewell, and give my regards to everyone.
Yours respectfully, A. Chekhov.
Life itself is turning, little by little, into one unbroken horror show. It is a gray existence; not a happy soul in sight...
Nikolai is with me. He is seriously ill (a gastric hemorrhage that has worn him down to nothing). Yesterday he gave me a real fright; today he is easier, easy enough that I now allow him a spoonful of milk every half hour. He lies there sober, meek, pale...
Everyone is having a bad time of it. When I turn serious, it seems to me that people who feel revulsion at death are not being logical. As far as I understand the order of things, life consists only of horrors, squabbles, and vulgarities, mingling and following one upon another... However, I have lapsed into Novoye Vremya-style belles-lettres. My fault.
Ma-Pa is well. There is no money.
