Completed in 1889 for that year's Exposition Universelle, the tower was less than two years old and still the newest, most-talked-about sight in Paris when Chekhov glimpsed it from the train window in fog on arrival; he does not editorialize on it, in keeping with this letter's clipped, dateline-and-facts register.

The 1889 Exposition Universelle grounds on the Champ de Mars, built around the newly completed Eiffel Tower; two years after the fair's official close the tower and its grounds remained a major Paris attraction, and Chekhov -- arriving in the city for the first time -- heads there immediately on the morning of his arrival (continuing directly from his first, foggy glimpse of the tower from the train two days earlier. \S3).
