An unnamed, red-haired Cossack encountered sitting sick and unable to travel by the roadside at Krivaya Balochka on Easter morning, on his way home on furlough; refused a share of the Gorchakovs' blessed kulich, he vanishes without a trace, and the Gorchakovs' guilt over turning him away destroys their peace and eventually their household.
