Nikolai Andreich Kapitonov

Nikolai Andreich

also: Николай Андреевич Капитонов, Николай Андреич, нотариус, the notary

A notary who comes home to find his wife kissing the family's young tutor and, instead of raging, responds with mock congratulations -- spending the rest of the story toying with both of them, alternately "sympathizing" with his wife's romance, prodding the terrified tutor with talk of duels and inheritance, and finally dismissing his own wife to the boy as a lying hysteric not worth the trouble.
