The Jubilee
"The Jubilee"
also: Юбилей, Yubiley
Chekhov's one-act farce "The Jubilee" (Юбилей), listed in this corpus's manifest (category: plays) with a composition/premiere year of 1891; here, in (22 February 1892), Chekhov reports to I. M. Kondratyev that he has finished writing it and that theatrical censorship has approved it, using the standard period genre tag "шутка в I действии, оригин." ("a joke in one act, original"). Distinct from the earlier prose story of the same title (1886) and from the unrelated juvenile piece "Мой юбилей" (1880).
Reading notes
- To I. M. Kondratyev, 22 February 1892. Moscow. §3 "The Jubilee," a joke in one act, original
Chekhov's one-act farce "The Jubilee" (Юбилей), written in early 1892 and here reported as having just cleared theatrical censorship. The source's genre tag "шутка в I действии, оригин." ("a joke in one act, original") is rendered directly; "original" here means an original composition rather than an adaptation or translation, a standard theatrical-censorship classification of the period. This is in this corpus's works manifest (category: plays, dated 1891 there per its composition/premiere year; this letter's February 1892 date marks the specific moment of censorship approval, not composition). Not to be confused with the earlier prose story also titled "Юбилей" (1886) nor with the unrelated juvenile piece "Мой юбилей" (1880).
