Chekhov writes from Moscow on 28 December 1889 to Ivan Maksimovich Kondratyev, reporting the current contractual status of five of his plays – he has given "The Wood Demon" to M. M. Abramova’s theater in Moscow through 15 February 1890, and has separately concluded agreements with the Alexandrinsky Theatre in Petersburg for "Ivanov" and "The Bear" (through 25 January 1891), "The Proposal" (through September 1891), and "The Swan Song" (through 28 December 1891) – then notes he is about to travel to the country and on to Petersburg, where he will lodge at the "Novoye Vremya" editorial offices, and closes with season’s greetings.

The third volume prints Chekhov’s letters from October 1888 to December 1889.
В третьем томе печатаются письма Чехова с октября 1888 по декабрь 1889 года.
This was a period of intensive correspondence with A. N. Pleshcheyev and A. S. Suvorin. The letters to them, and also to other writers – D. V. Grigorovich, K. S. Barantsevich, I. L. Leontyev (Shcheglov), A. S. Lazarev (Gruzinsky), V. A. Tikhonov – contain valuable material for the study of Chekhov’s aesthetic views, his work as a writer, and the creative history of individual works. He wrote about the tasks of artistic creation, about the contemporary theater, about criticism, and about Russian and Western European literature (Goncharov, Dostoevsky, Saltykov-Shchedrin, Leo Tolstoy, P. Bourget, E. Zola, and others).
В это время велась интенсивная переписка с А. Н. Плещеевым и А. С. Сувориным. Письма к ним, а также к другим литераторам: Д. В. Григоровичу, К. С. Баранцевичу, И. Л. Леонтьеву (Щеглову), А. С. Лазареву (Грузинскому), В. А. Тихонову – содержат ценный материал для изучения эстетических взглядов Чехова, его писательской работы, творческой истории отдельных произведений. Он писал о задачах художественного творчества, о современном театре, критике, о русской и западноевропейской литературе (Гончарове, Достоевском, Салтыкове-Щедрине, Льве Толстом, П. Бурже, Э. Золя и др.).
The circle of addressees expanded considerably: the volume prints the first letters to V. A. Goltsev, P. A. Gaideburov, A. M. Yevreinova, A. I. Sumbatov (Yuzhin), A. P. and L. N. Lensky, Ye. M. and N. M. Lintvaryov, N. N. Obolonsky, and others – twenty-five new addressees in all. The year 1889 saw the beginning of Chekhov’s acquaintance and correspondence with P. I. Tchaikovsky, and his growing closeness with the actor P. M. Svobodin. Chekhov’s letters to Svobodin have not survived. The character of the correspondence can be judged only from Svobodin’s answering letters (see the section "Letters Not Preserved and Not Found").
Значительно расширился круг адресатов: в томе печатаются первые письма к В. А. Гольцеву, П. А. Гайдебурову, А. М. Евреиновой, А. И. Сумбатову (Южину), А. П. и Л. Н. Ленским, Е. М. и H. M. Линтваревым, H. H. Оболонскому и др.– всего 25 новых адресатов. К 1889 году относится знакомство и начало переписки с П. И. Чайковским, сближение с артистом П. М. Свободиным. Письма Чехова к Свободину не сохранились. О характере переписки можно судить лишь по ответным письмам П. М. Свободина (см. раздел "Несохранившиеся и ненайденные письма").
In these years the stories and novellas "Name-Day," "The Princess," "A Nervous Breakdown," and "A Dreary Story" were written, placing Chekhov among the foremost writers of the day. Work was also underway on a novel that was never finished, and on a novella that remained unpublished in its first draft. The letters are all but the sole source of information about these works (see the notes to Letters 539 and 621).
В эти годы написаны повести и рассказы: "Именины", "Княгиня", "Припадок", "Скучная история", выдвинувшие Чехова в ряд самых крупных писателей. Шла работа над романом, который не был закончен, и повестью, оставшейся в первоначальном варианте ненапечатанной. At the end of 1888 and the beginning of 1889 Chekhov was reworking the play "Ivanov" ahead of its staging at the Alexandrinsky Theatre, and in 1889 he worked on the play "The Wood Demon," which was also intended for staging at that theater but was rejected by the Literary-Theatrical Committee. "The Wood Demon" was first staged at M. M. Abramova’s theater in Moscow on 27 December 1889. The letters reveal the creative and stage history of these plays, as well as of the vaudevilles "The Proposal," "The Tragedian in Spite of Himself," and "The Wedding," written in 1888 and 1889, and the vaudeville "The Bear," staged at the end of 1888.
В конце 1888 и начале 1889 г. Чехов переделывал пьесу "Иванов" перед постановкой ее в Александрийском театре, а в 1889 г. работал над пьесой "Леший", также намечавшейся к постановке в этом театре, но отвергнутой Литературно-театральным комитетом. Впервые "Леший" был поставлен в московском театре M. M. Абрамовой 27 декабря 1889 г. Письма раскрывают творческую и сценическую историю этих пьес, а также водевилей "Предложение", "Трагик поневоле", "Свадьба", написанных в 1888 и 1889 годах, и водевиля "Медведь", поставленного в конце 1888 года.
At the end of 1888 a second edition of the story collection "In the Twilight" appeared; in 1889, the collection "Children," a second edition of the book "Stories," and a third edition of "In the Twilight." In October 1888 Chekhov received half of the Pushkin Prize for the book "In the Twilight." At the end of 1889 a new book of stories, "Gloomy People," was prepared for print. Many letters touch on these events.
В конце 1888 г. вышло 2-е издание сборника рассказов "В сумерках", в 1889 г. – сборник "Детвора", 2-е издание книги "Рассказы" и 3-е издание "В сумерках". В октябре 1888 г. Чехов получил за книгу "В сумерках" половинную Пушкинскую премию. В конце 1889 г. была подготовлена к печати новая книга рассказов – "Хмурые люди". Многие письма касаются этих событий.
Chekhov edited the manuscripts of beginning writers and reworked stories rejected by the editorial staff of "Novoye Vremya," after which they were printed in the newspaper. This too is reflected in the correspondence.

The present volume includes letters previously not included in the epistolary volumes of collected editions of A. P. Chekhov’s works: to A. M. Yevreinova of 8 and 17 February 1889, to N. A. Leikin of 21 February 1889, to A. N. Maslov (Bezhetsky) of mid-October 1888, to Ye. A. Sysoyeva of 2 November 1888, and to an unidentified person of 11 December 1888 (these letters were published in "Literaturnoye nasledstvo," vol. 68); to I. M. Kondratyev of 28 December 1889 (printed in the collection "Voprosy teatra" [Questions of the Theater], VTO, Moscow, 1966); to M. P. Chekhova of 28 April 1889 (M. P. Chekhova, Iz dalyokogo proshlogo [From the Distant Past], Moscow, 1960). Three letters to M. M. Dyukovsky – of 5 October, 13 December 1888, and 7 January 1889 – and a telegram to A. K. Sheller-Mikhailov of 10 October 1888 are published here for the first time.

Twenty-four letters previously printed from copies of printed sources are given here from autographs now discovered: Nos. 490, 491, 493, 521, 543, 556, 558, 588, 608, 611, 624, 631, 636, 639, 642, 662, 673, 686, 699, 703, 712, 723, 730, 742. The autographs of thirty-one letters remain unknown as before.
