Chekhov's phrase names the great Roman basilica of St. Peter (San Pietro in Vaticano) rather than a genuine "Church of Peter and Paul" as such -- a loose but common period habit of pairing the two apostles' names for the Roman church most associated with St. Peter's martyrdom and tomb. Rendered here as given rather than silently corrected to "St. Peter's."
