Maxim Gorchakov

A tenant farmer of the Nizy farmstead and a burgher of Berdyansk, driving home from church with his young wife on Easter morning; his refusal, at his wife's insistence, to share their blessed kulich with a sick Cossack they meet on the road curdles into a guilt that unravels his marriage and, eventually, his farm.
