Listok (feuilleton press)
the Sheet
also: Листок, Listok, a certain Sheet
The cheap satirical weekly "sheets" (listki) of the Moscow and Petersburg humor press, the very market this squib was written for. Naming one as a disqualifying credential is the joke's swipe at the trade.
Reading notes
- Good People §1 критический фельетон
A fel'eton was the light, topical, often serialized column running beneath the fold of a Russian newspaper -- book and theater reviews, social commentary, causerie -- a form associated with quick, disposable journalism rather than serious criticism, which is part of the story's gentle irony about Vladimir Semyonych's self-importance.
- A Cook Wanted §1 a certain Sheet
A swipe at the cheap satirical "Listok" weeklies of the day -- the very kind of paper this squib was written for -- slipped into a housekeeping want-ad as if it were a normal hiring requirement.
