A young man of about twenty-two or twenty-three, introduced to Nikolai Yevgrafych and Olga Dmitrievna in Petersburg by a school friend of the doctor's; Olga Dmitrievna's lover, whom she visits at his hotel and drives out of town with, and who signs the Monte Carlo telegram (as "Michel") that exposes the affair to her husband.
