Pismo (The Letter)
The Letter
also: Письмо, "The Letter"
A story by Alexander Chekhov, published under the Chekhov name; Suvorin read it while travelling near Simferopol, disliked it, and dashed off a rude accusatory note to Alexander over the shared surname -- the incident that occasions this letter. Alexander's own work, distinct from anything by Anton.

- To Al. P. Chekhov, 24 September 1888. Moscow. §4 your story "The Letter"
"The Letter" (Письмо) is a story by the letter's addressee, Alexander Chekhov, published under the Chekhov name -- not a work of Anton's, and not to be confused with the present letter itself. Suvorin read it while travelling and, disliking it, wrote Alexander an angry note accusing him of "usurping" the family name; that note is the incident this whole letter responds to.
